May 13 2021, Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid Mubarak) was celebrated for the second time in lockdown this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Although every preparation was done in moderation just like last year, this year was special since it’s your first time fasting through Ramadhan. Of course, we did not force you to fast because we are not sure whether that you are ready but to our surprise, you fasted for the 30 whole days without complaining at all. Fasting without food or water for nearly 14 hours is not easy especially for kids at your age but you didn’t grumble a bit.
A few days before the celebration, you were thrilled and started singing the Hari Raya songs. Babah put up the colorful lights which he promised to do so and it was a beautiful sight. This year, I get to learn how to cook Nenek’s special spicy Minang beef rendang, which is your favorite.
You woke up early that day, not too eager to wear the Traditional Baju Melayu but straight away was in the mood when I offered you a cookie. You said it was the best cookie you have ever tasted! And cheekily said you are happy because there’s no need to fast anymore!!
Although we felt unhappy because of the Covid-19 situation here in Malaysia and to what’s happening around the world especially the suffering and the innocent killings of children in Palestine, we thank Allah for everything we have, everything we had and everything we will have. We pray that next year will be a much brighter Hari Raya and that we get to celebrate it with our beloved families and friends that we missed so much.
